On Sunday's episode of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," Leakes opened up about the emotional challenges of taking care of her husband, Gregg, while he's battling stage 3 colon cancer.

"Being a caregiver is a difficult role to play," Leakes, 51, said on the Bravo show. "I am the closest thing to him so if he wants to vent or yell or be mean, I'm the person that he's doing that to. It really has been difficult for me."

After the episode aired, Gregg took to Instagram to apologize for hurting Leakes and expressed his gratitude toward his wife.

"We always hurt the ones we Love..because they allow us to hurt them rather than snap back," Gregg captioned a photo of Leakes. "I’m tired of hurting my wife who is only trying to take good care of me and wants only the best for me too."

He continued: "She deserves much more for her hard efforts and tireless hours spent on me. I Pray to God to get it together.. She’s done NO wrong… this is ALL on me…Cancer WILL change your Life."

Leakes previously addressed her husband's behavior on Twitter.

"I would just think if i have or had cancer, i would see life so differently! Not being mean, grouchy and evil for no real reason!" she tweeted Nov. 29. "But that’s me. Pray for me."

In November, the couple disclosed the type of cancer Gregg is battling on the Season 11 premiere of the show after going public with his health struggles in June. She recalled the dire moments leading up to Gregg's diagnosis.

"It was Cinco de Mayo," Leakes said. "Gregg was in excruciating pain. Like, I’ve never seen him say, 'I'm hurting so bad, the pain is so bad in my stomach.' And finally he said to me, 'Take me to the hospital.'"

At the hospital, Gregg learned his life was hanging in the balance and that he had to undergo an emergency operation to remove part of his colon that was "infected."

"We just weren’t prepared to hear that," NeNe added.

NeNe and Gregg share two children, Bryson and Brentt, as well as a granddaughter, Bri'Asia Bryant. The couple married in 1997, but divorced in 2011 following a year of separation.

They remarried in June 2013 during a ceremony filmed for Bravo's spin-off "I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding."
