Gregory County takes down Platte/Geddes in Class B state Legion in opening round

Jul. 30—GREGORY, S.D. — Rylan Peck had a home run, helping to power Gregory County to a 4-2 win at the South Dakota American Legion Class B baseball state tournament over Platte/Geddes.

Peck had two hits and two runs scored, while Bryce Frank and Brogan Glover each had two hits for Gregory County, which outhit Platte/Geddes, 9-5. Frank was the winning pitcher, throwing four innings in 44 pitches and allowing only two hits without a run. Glover recorded eight outs in relief and Ben Witt picked up the final out on the mound in the seventh. Combined, the pair allowed three hits, two runs and struck out five.

Platte/Geddes had two hits from Aiden Bultje and drove in a run, joined by Jackson Neuman with an RBI. Dawson Hoffman threw one inning and was pulled after 30 pitches, allowing four hits and two runs. Neuman threw two innings and allowed three hits, two runs and struck out two, with Oakley Kott tossing the final three frames for P/G and striking out three without allowing a run.

Gregory County (17-4) will take on Redfield at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in a winner's bracket game. Platte/Geddes (13-4) will take on Milbank at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game.

GREGORY, S.D. — In a meeting of perennial strong Legion baseball programs, Vermillion picked up a first-round win at the Class B state tournament, with three runs in the sixth inning to take control of the game.

Dell Rapids outhit Vermillion 11-6. Connor Saunders had two hits for Vermillion and Jack Kratz scored two times for Post 1. Jake Jensen threw four innings in his start and allowed seven runs and nine hits. Ben Burbach and Will Robertson covered the final three innings on the mound without allowing a run.

Braden Pankonen was the losing pitcher for Dell Rapids, allowing six hits, four runs and striking out two in 3 1/3 innings. Jack Henry was the starter for Dells, with four runs allowed without a hit in 1 2/3 innings. Pankonen, Rechtenbaugh and C.J. Smith each had two hits for Dell Rapids.

Vermillion (19-9) will take on Winner/Colome at 5 p.m. Saturday in the winner's bracket, while Dell Rapids (21-11) faces Hartford/Humboldt at 12:30 p.m. in an elimination game on Saturday.
