Grey’s Anatomy star Giacomo Gianniotti's new police drama series Wild Cards might be getting a second season.

The comedy drama from The CW, which stars Gianniotti opposite Riverdale's Vanessa Morgan, launched in January and proved to be a big hit with viewers.

The Canadian police procedural has averaged over 500,000 views in the live overnights, per the Nielsen charts, a figure that The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz says is likely to rise to about 1M over the first seven days (via Deadline).

Schwartz said: "That’s a nice success for us. If we can do seven nights a week with a million viewers, that would be goal number one, then two million."

Due to the success of season 1, Schwartz said that they are already in discussions about renewing the show for a season 2.

"We have not renewed it yet but that is a conversation that’s happening right now. It’s the type of show that could run for ten seasons, those shows don’t exist much anymore. It really could be something," he said.

In season 1 Gianniotti played a straight-laced cop named Ellis, who, after being demoted, spent a year working as a maritime officer, while Morgan starred as Max, a con artist with a love of disguises.

After Max is arrested she is paired with Ellis and the unlikely duo are tasked with using their individual skills to solve a wave of crimes.

Gianniotti is best known for starring as Andrew DeLuca on Grey's Anatomy before being killed off. He previously returned behind the camera to direct an episode.

Speaking to Digital Spy about directing, he said: "I want a career in directing in Hollywood and elsewhere. I love directing. I love filmmaking. I love filmmakers. I love working with cinematographers and getting a deeper understanding of the cameras and the lenses and the technology."
