‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans Are Very Confused by How Meredith’s Coma Works

[There are spoilers ahead for last night’s Grey’s Anatomy. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, maybe come back to this post later!]

Last night’s Grey’s Anatomy finally gave fans what they’ve been waiting for all season—an awake Meredith. But she woke up only at the very end of the episode. And then she basically went right back into her coma because of her COVID-19 symptoms. Ah, Grey’s. You’ve done it again. But fans are confused about one thing in particular: what Meredith can or cannot hear while she’s unconscious.

When she emerged from her coma, one of the first things she said was, “We need to talk about Wilson.” She’s referring to Jo, who has been struggling with what she wants to do with her life. While Meredith was unconscious, Jo told her she was thinking about quitting surgery in favor of pediatrics. But…how did Meredith hear that? And what else has she heard? Fans on Reddit have a lot of questions.

“Out of all the things Meredith has heard and done since being on the vent, her first words to Webber are about Jo wanting to change specialties? Really?” one of them wrote. Another fan, when summarizing the end of the episode, wrote, “Meredith wakes up 10 minutes before the episode ends, thanks Richard for making the tough decisions about her medical care, and then immediately tells him about Jo wanting to switch specialties—because apparently, she can hear everything they’re saying while she’s in a coma!!!” And fans on Twitter are equally confused.

Because Meredith woke up so close to the end of the episode, there wasn’t a lot of time to resolve any of this. The big question it leaves is whether or not Meredith knows DeLuca is dead. She did talk to him on the beach, so maybe she has a clue? And if she can hear what’s been going on around her, then probably? It’s confusing. Hopefully next week, we get some answers.
