Grey's Anatomy star Giacomo Gianniotti and Riverdale's Vanessa Morgan have got a new crime series called Wild Cards on the way, and a trailer has just been released.

The comedy drama casts Gianniotti as a straight-laced cop, while Morgan plays a con artist character with a love of accents, disguises, and the finer things in life.

Through a series of events, the mismatched duo are paired together and tasked with stopping a wave of crimes that the authorities are having trouble getting to the bottom of. Can they put aside their differences and work successfully as a team?

Gianniotti played Andrew DeLuca on Grey's for six years before the character was brutally killed off. That didn't mean that he completely left the medical drama, however, as he returned to direct an episode.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy ahead of his debut as a primetime TV director, Gianniotti said: "I definitely wanted to make that step forward, and so three years back, I asked for a meeting with Debbie Allen, our executive director.

"She said, 'Okay, start working and start shadowing'. So I spent three years shadowing different directors and studying and doing a tonne of training.

"And she decided finally I was ready and handed me an episode this season. I worked my ass off on it, and I'm really proud of it."

He also explained that directing is something he'd love to do more of in the future, as he said: "I think there's a lot of actors that are on shows and they're like, 'I'd like to direct an episode', and then it's sort of like checking off something on their bucket list. This is not the case for me.

"I want a career in directing in Hollywood and elsewhere. I love directing. I love filmmaking. I love filmmakers. I love working with cinematographers and getting a deeper understanding of the cameras and the lenses and the technology."

Wild Cards premieres on Wednesday, January 17 at 8/7c, airing on The CW in the US.
