Grey's Anatomy looks set to devote an episode to one of its longest-running characters in its next season.

Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr) has long been a key part of the show, and it now looks like we will get a whole hour focused on him.

"We have big episode for him this season," showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed to TVLine. "I don't feel like he's quite been given his due."

However, she teased that the episode won't quite be in the same mold as Grey's recent character-centric outings.

"The standalone episodes are always evolving," she continued. "They were born out of scheduling, because we could shoot them simultaneously with other episodes. But my hope for this season is to make those episodes feel a little more like our traditional episodes."

Vernoff referred to season 14's single-day episode, which focused on Meredith Grey, April Kepner and Owen Hunt, as a model going forward.

"That was a standalone, but it didn't feel like one," she added. "So we're trying to make those episodes feel a little more cohesive with the rest of the season."

Season 16 is also looks set to get a blast from the past, as a classic character is set to return – though Vernoff isn't naming names as of yet.

"I'm trying to get someone back," she said. "There's someone I'm hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] it's a real maybe. I'm trying."

Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC in the US on Thursday, September 26. It airs on Sky Witness and NOW TV in the UK.
