A number of original Grey's Anatomy stars have shared a reunion at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), James Pickens Jr (Richard Webber), and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) were joined on stage by Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens) and Justin Chambers (Alex Karev).

The five of them presented the award for Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, which went to Black Bird's Paul Walter Hauser.

Pickens Jr also posted a behind-the-scenes group photo on his Instagram, with the caption: "Good Times With Friends at The Emmys!"

Heigl left the show after season six, and explained in 2022 that she wanted to spend more time with her family at the time.

"I was at work with three triplets who were playing my goddaughter, and I spent more time with them than I did with my new daughter and she bonded with my husband," she said. "So, I was always afraid that I had missed that opportunity to really bond with her and that she didn't love me."

Chambers departed during season 16 in an abrupt exit for his character, leaving his wife Jo Wilson.

In a surprising and divisive twist, Alex ended up reuniting off-screen with Izzie, raising twins in Kansas.

In 2020, Krista Vernoff, who was showrunner of the show at the time, said she wasn't surprised by the negative reaction over Alex's exit but said it was a better option than killing the character off.

"I believe that there would've been at least as big an outcry if we had killed that character off-camera, and those were our choices," she said.

"It was kill the character off-camera or come up with some believable way that he gets his happily ever after."

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season will premiere on March 14, 2024 on ABC in the US. Grey's streams on Disney+ in the UK.
