Here are Grice’s Gems, the top North Carolina high school football performances from Week 8, from The Observer’s Talking Preps show.

Braden Atkinson, Rolesville: The Rams’ quarterback was 30-of-40 for 418 yards and four touchdowns in a 53-30 win against Millbrook. Rolesville has won five straight games. Running back Devon Thomas, a Mr. Football finalist, had 21 carries for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

Jeremiah Johnson, Pender: The 5-foot-8, 215-pound junior ran 44 times for 377 yards and six touchdowns in a 106-83 win against Hobbton that set a new single-game NCHSAA scoring record. Pender had 912 yards rushing, including 271 yards and six touchdowns from Jassiah Hill on 17 carries. Pender broke the single-game rushing record of 801, set seven years ago by Alexander Central.

Justin Little, Independence: In a 54-21 win against Providence, the junior quarterback was 12-of-16 for 353 yards and five touchdowns. He ran six times for 86 yards and another score.

Johnathan Montague, Clayton: In a 49-6 win against South Garner, Montague ran 18 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns. He was 11-of-11 passing for 164 yards and two scores.

Jadyn Davis, Providence Day: In a 49-13 win against Charlotte Country Day, Davis was 12-of-14 for 298 yards and five touchdowns. For the season, Davis is 110-of-139 for 1,972 yards and 26 touchdowns. Davis threw his first interception of the year against Country Day. It was the first in 137 attempts this year, and his first in 275 attempts dating to last season.
