Hillsdale Middle School's Emma Grimwood won the DARE essay contest for Ashland County.

"I am very proud of Emma," Principal Tim Keib said, adding Grimwood is a five-time winner.

"It's really interesting (because) they have two weeks to write and pick things out of the DARE book to write about," Ashland County Sheriff's deputy Bill Martin said. "And Emma had it done really quick like."

Deputy Brian Martin has been the DARE officer for Hillsdale Middle School for five years.

Grimwood, a fifth-grader, won a teddy bear, Darren, the DARE mascot, a ride in the Ashland Memorial Day parade, free lunch anywhere of her choosing and a backpack, as well, with other items.

In Grimwood's free tim, she likes to help out on her family farm in the Jeromesville area, as she helps raises her show pigs and beef, and also plays with her dog ,Coco, and her four cats.

Grimwood's favorite thing about the DARE program was role playing. Students also put on on "drunken goggles" to experience what it was like to be intoxicated and got to see pig lungs showing what smoking can do to lungs.
