One man is dead and a 17-year-old boy is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a car swerved into another lane, crashed into guardrail then hit a tree Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred on Hopeville Road (Route 201) in Griswold around 1 p.m., state police said.

The vehicle, driven by 55-year-old David Mack of Jewett City, swerved into the oncoming lane before hitting a metal guardrail.

The car then swerved back into the initial northbound lane it was traveling on, and “continued towards the grassy/wooded right shoulder, ultimately colliding with a standing tree,” police said.

Mack was pronounced dead at the scene, meanwhile a 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle was transported to Backus Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are unsure of what caused the car to swerve across lanes and result in an accident, they said.
