Grocery Outlet plans to open a Port Hueneme store in a long-vacant building in February.

Located on Ventura Road near Pleasant Valley Road, the supermarket will fill a void left by the site’s previous tenants, Mary’s Food Market and Tradewinds Market.

The 16,700-square-foot building had been empty for over six years, Tony Stewart, the city’s community development director, said last week.

Once open, the supermarket will be the second in the city. The other, Ralphs, is on Channel Islands Boulevard about 1.5 miles away.

“It’s going to make it convenient for people in that area, so they don’t have to drive to the other part of town,” said Mayor Bobby Martinez.

Grocery Outlet buys excess inventory from other stores to sell at a discounted price.

On Nov. 15, a KDC Construction crew was on-site nailing down loose panels on the exterior in preparation for a new paint job. A second crew worked inside the gutted building.

Adrian Soto, a superintendent with the Orange-based company, said construction started in September. The store’s grand opening is slated for Feb. 22, he added.
