New grocery store proposed for Route 18 in East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK - A new grocery store has been proposed for Route 18.

Lidl U.S. Operations LLC is seeking preliminary and final major site plan approval to demolish the existing building at 651 Route 18 and construct a 31,042-square-foot grocery store at the site, according to a public notice.

A Planning Board hearing on the application is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Municipal Complex, 1 Jean Walling Center.

The property, which was formerly occupied by Unclaimed Freight, is located in the HC-2 (General Highway Commercial) Zone.

The applicant seeks all variances, waivers, exceptions, interpretations and other relief necessary, which may include variances for:

  • A side yard setback of 4.9 feet where a minimum of 20 feet is required

  • A rear yard setback of 5 feet where a minimum of 60 feet is required

  • A landscape buffer of 13.2 feet where a minimum of 20 feet is required

  • Lot coverage of 90.9% where a maximum 75% is required

  • Parking area and driveway setback from the side lot line of 0 feet where a minimum of 10 feet is required

  • Parking area and driveway setback from the rear lot line of 0 feet where a minimum of 10 feet is required

  • Planting 23 canopy trees in the parking area where a minimum of 32 canopy trees is required

Lidl, the German discount grocer, operates about 11,200 stores and is active in 32 countries, employing more than 310,000 people globally, according to its website. Lidl first established its U.S. headquarters in Arlington County, Virginia, in June 2015, and today sells its products in more than 100 stores across nine East Coast states, the website says.

The plans, reports, application and supporting materials are available for viewing at the office of the Department of Planning and Engineering in the Municipal Building during normal business hours.
