Celebrating Christmas generally involves family gatherings and holiday parties.

While we do our best to have everything prepared, Murphy's Law dictates something will be forgotten. You may need to make a trip to the grocery store to get that last ingredient for your cookies or maybe you spaced buying that ham.

No worries. There are some places for you to find what you need on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but those options become very limited on Christmas. Here's a look at what grocery stores are open during the holidays. Be sure to call ahead before you go. Store hours can vary by location.

Grocery stores open Christmas Eve

  • Aldi: Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 24.

  • CVS: Hours vary by location. Click here to find your nearest CVS location.

  • Dollar General: Hours vary by location with some offering extended hours. Some stores may open as early as 7 a.m. and close as late as 10 p.m. Check with your local store for details.

  • Kroger: Open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 24. Pharmacies close at 5 p.m.

  • Hy-Vee: Open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 24.

  • Sam's Club: Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 24.

  • Schnucks: Open 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 24.

  • Target: Open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 24. Check with your local store, as times may vary.

  • Walgreens: Twenty-four-hour Walgreens locations and 24-hour pharmacies will continue to remain open. Other stores will remain open regular store hours. Click here to check local stores for details.

  • Walmart: Open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
