Groundhog Day 2021 prediction: See if Phil will see his shadow on Tuesday

An early spring or six more weeks of winter? Come Feb. 2, Phil will give us the answer.

On Tuesday, the all-knowing Punxsutawney Phil will pop out of his burrow in the ground and let us in on the secret meteorologists have been keeping from us.

Punxsutawney Phil is anticipated to leave his burrow and look for his shadow for the 135th time, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

While in previous years the day's festivities kicked off early in the morning with large crowds, this year's event will begin later and be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When does Punxsutawney Phil come out for Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day 2021 will be celebrated at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2. That's when Punxsutawney Phil is anticipated to leave his burrow and look for his shadow for the 135th time, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

While in previous years the day's festivities kicked off early in the morning with large crowds, this year's event will begin later and be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While no official plans have been released, the Groundhog Club will host other virtual activities on the day of the event. A list will be posted on the club's website.

And Punxsutawney surely isn't the only town with a weather-predicting rodent, but it is the most famous.

Uni the creek-sailing Groundhog will go virtual for its annual weather prediction in Myerstown, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday.

The shadow tradition explained

So, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day...?

Tradition says Phil seeing his shadow is a sign that the next six weeks will bring wintry weather.

If Phil doesn't see his shadow, it means an early spring.

If the early weather forecast is any indication, he will predict six more weeks of winter. (Which he usually does.)

How to watch live Groundhog Day activities

There will be a live broadcast available on VisitPa's website.

It can also be viewed on The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Facebook page and Punxsutawney Phil's YouTube channel.
