Group urges ‘livable’ wage, benefits for caregivers

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — To recognize National Caregivers Day, a Borderland organization is asking Gov. Greg Abbott to support “livable wages and benefits” for caregivers and attendants.

Members of El Paso Desert ADAPT/PACT delivered a letter to state Sen. Cesar Blanco, D-El Paso and asked him to support and send the letter on to the governor.

The letter demands that the governor “prioritize and publicly support necessary appropriations to meet a livable wage and benefits” for caregivers and for the governor to meet with members of the group.

According to the group, the current “base wage” for home and community-based services employees is $10.60 an hour with no health benefits or vacation.

According to the letter, ADAPT of Texas and Personal Attendant Coalition of Texas (PACT) represent about 300,000 community attendants and caregivers who work in Texas.
