An elderly Grovetown man this week reported he was swindled out of nearly $9,000 by a scammer claiming to be Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The 73-year-old man on Monday told Columbia County sheriff's deputies he responded to an advertisement on Facebook about buying a Tesla and was contacted by a man claiming to be Elon Musk, according to an incident report.

The man told deputies that since January he was asked by Musk to purchase $8,800 in gift cards and send him the card numbers to finance the Tesla purchase, according to the report.

Deputies noted the man was running out of money when Musk pushed him to buy more and became hostile when he said he would stop buying the cards, according to the report.

After the latest interaction on Monday, the man went to his bank to see what he could do and they told him he was scammed, according to the report.
