Grovetown woman, 70, scammed out of $160,000 by man on dating site

A 70-year-old Grovetown woman was scammed out of about $160,000 by a man on a dating app.

The woman told Columbia County deputies she started talking to a man on a dating site called Zoosk in October, but they have only spoken on the phone and haven't met in person, according to an incident report.

She told deputies he started asking her to cash some of his checks for him and she agreed to send him the money back via cryptocurrency, according to the report. The woman then started taking out personal loans to send the man money.

The woman told deputies she believed she had sent the man approximately $160,000, according to the report.

Deputies noted a friend told her she was possibly being scammed because the man called her Thursday and said he was being detained at the Atlanta airport and needed her to send him $3,000 via cryptocurrency to get him released from their custody, according to the report.
