Winthrop University in Rock Hill has its Eagle. Clinton College in the city has its Golden Bear.

Soon, York Technical College also will have a mascot.

And the Rock Hill, S.C., school wants input from people connected to the school before it decides if the mascot will be a gryphon or a blue wolf.

York Tech has more than 5,000 students at its main campus, and its satellite in Chester. It has been an integral part of education and workforce development in the area since 1964.

A gryphon is generally regarded as a mythological creature with the body of a lion, wings and head of a raptor, according to Grant Suskin, a spokesman for the school.

A gryphon is sometimes spelled as griffon or griffin.

Blue wolves are distinct because of the rare color of their fur.

The school that has been a springboard to professional and vocational careers wants to capture an identity that captures the identity of the spirit of the college that will be a part of the school’s present and future, officials said in a statement.

Current students and staff, along with thousands of alumni, will have a chance to weigh in on their choice through a campus-wide survey school officials are sending out through a mass e-mail.

The survey will be open from Aug. 28 until Sept. 12.
