Guardians of the Galaxy 3's Groot and Gamora scene is sadder than you think

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 spoilers follow.

Marvel fans will know that Zoe Saldaña's character Gamora faced a tragic end in Avengers: Infinity War at the hands of Thanos, bringing her connection with the Guardians to a close and the family they had built together were devastated.

However, in the multiverse twists and turns of the MCU, Gamora makes a return in the latest Guardians of the Galaxy movie, though this time she is an older variant who has no memories of her relationship with Peter Quill or any of the team.

In particular, original Gamora's connection with Groot was a heartwarming one, but this is tragically lost in the new instalment as she now sees him as a stranger.

This heartbreaking development is played out especially in one particular scene towards the end of Volume 3, which director James Gunn has revealed is especially poignant in the audio commentary for the movie (via ComicBook).

"This is a scene that I don't think people necessarily understand. Groot - his mother is Gamora, to him, in his eyes. We've seen Baby Groot, and how much Gamora loves him in Volume 2, and how much he loves her. Like... that is his mom. And so there's a particular sadness here, where she doesn't remember him.

"That, to me, is one of the saddest things in the entire movie, that your mother doesn't know who you are. And it's such a small moment where she understands him, suddenly."

Speaking about the dramatic change to her character, Saldaña explained to Digital Spy the thrill she found in exploring a new "wild side".

"There's definitely a wild side to her. This Gamora enjoyed, I wouldn't say she enjoyed violence, she enjoyed living on the wild side and that's something that the old Gamora abhorred, she used to despise it.

"Violence was something that caused a great deal of trauma to her, and every time she had to be violent, it would not make her feel proud of herself so that was the difference in this instalment. It was fun being in her skin, but she's quite crazy so I don't think she has anything in common with the old Gamora or with me, I'll have to say."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
