Guardians of the Galaxy 3 star Pom Klementieff has admitted that she had been sitting on a big secret about Mantis ever since she accepted the role.

In The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Mantis confirms that she and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) are brother and sister as Mantis's father is also Ego.

"Your father, Peter, he might be… he might be… he is… my father, too," she says towards the end of the special, to which a happily surprised Quill replies: "Mantis, that’s the greatest Christmas gift I could ever get!"

Speaking to Digital Spy ahead of the third instalment's release, Klementieff revealed that director James Gunn told her about Mantis and Quill's relation as soon as she was cast, but the big reveal kept getting pushed back.

"I knew that since the beginning, since I got cast as Mantis. James Gunn told me that we were siblings and it was supposed to be in one scene with Gamora and Mantis, I was supposed to say something that I was Peter Quill's sister," she said.

"It got cut out of the movie and then the movie was pushed for years and then finally we got to shoot a scene in the Holiday Special that revealed that. I had to keep the secret for years, and the cast knew as well.

After fans bid farewell to Mantis in the final Guardians movie next week, they'll be able to watch Klementieff's mysterious villain in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One this July.

"She is somebody who, at the start of our story, is partnered with Esai [Morales] and represents this malevolent force that Ethan [Hunt, played by Tom Cruise] is opposed to," director Christopher McQuarrie told Entertainment Weekly.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
