Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 spoilers follow.

Zoe Saldaña has opened up about playing a new version of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

The finale of director James Gunn's Guardians trilogy dips into the Marvel Multiverse concept because Zoe's character, Gamora, isn't the same one from the first two films.

The original Gamora was sacrificed by her father Thanos to acquire the Soul Stone in Avengers: Infinity War — a creative choice that Gunn has admitted he had his issues with.

When the Avengers traveled back into time to try to stop Thanos, it created a split timeline where an earlier variant of Gamora entered their time stream. This earlier variant is the Gamora in Vol 3.

When Digital Spy chatted with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast, Zoe teased that this new Gamora is far more unpredictable than what fans have previously seen.

"There's definitely a wild side to her," she said. "This Gamora enjoyed, I wouldn't say she enjoyed violence, she enjoyed living on the wild side and that's something that the old Gamora abhorred, she used to despise it.

"Violence was something that caused a great deal of trauma to her, and every time she had to be violent, it would not make her feel proud of herself so that was the difference in this instalment. It was fun being in her skin, but she's quite crazy so I don't think she has anything in common with the old Gamora or with me, I'll have to say."

The third Guardians film also offered more opportunity for Zoe and the cast to be involved in some of the most ambitious stunts in recent MCU history.

"It was a thrill," she said. "I know that my films are numbered, the opportunities of me being able to do my own stunts are becoming fewer and fewer because my body is sort of like tapping me out [laughs]. Doing those stunt rehearsals for this last instalment was the beginning of like, 'Ooo what's that, I just heard my shoulder here, oh my elbow's trying to say something as well'.

"I got to work with an amazing stunt team, I got to have amazing stunt choreography for Gamora. I had a great stunt double and she's been my girl since the Avatar years, Alicia Vela-Bailey. So we had a blast."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
