Guatemalan River Rages as Tropical Depression Iota Brings Flooding to Town of Jocotán

Flooding from Tropical Depression Iota hit the eastern Guatemalan town of Jocotán, in the Chiquimula department, on November 18, as the Jupilingo River overflowed its banks.

Footage uploaded to Facebook by the Municipalidad de la Villa de Santiago Jocotán shows the raging Jupilingo River, as well as the resulting flood in the nearby town.

Once a Category 5 hurricane, the storm had weakened to a tropical depression by the early hours of November 18. The National Hurricane Center warned of flooding and landslides, especially given soils already saturated by recent storms. Credit: Municipalidad de la Villa de Santiago Jocotán via Storyful
