Guernsey County hosts annual judges conference
CAMBRIDGE − The Guernsey County Common Pleas Court, Probate/Juvenile Division recently hosted the Ohio Association of Probate, Juvenile, and Domestic Relations Judges 2023 annual summer conference.
More than 140 judges and their families from across the state converged upon the Salt Fork State Park and Lodge in Cambridge June 5 to 8, where the event was held.
The Ohio Association of Probate Judges is comprised of all judges in Ohio with probate court jurisdiction. The association, a non-profit organization, operates for educational and charitable purposes. Annually, the association sponsors a summer educational and business meeting for judges, which promotes collegiality allowing for the sharing of ideas and experiences concerning the operation of probate courts.
During the probate sessions, continuing legal education was provided to Ohio’s probate judges on legislative and case law updates, best practices workgroup, attorney fees and guardianships, and decision-making.
As part of the annual event, a banquet was held featuring the swearing-in of new officers, among which was Guernsey County’s Judge David B. Bennett. Bennett was elected to serve as the group’s secretary/historian. Conducting the swearing-in ceremony was Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy of the Supreme Court of Ohio.
Bennett, who is serving his second term as judge of the Guernsey County Probate/Juvenile Court, also maintains statewide involvement with the Probate Law and Procedures Committee, Juvenile Law and Procedures Committee, Ohio Supreme Court Commission on the Rules of Superintendence, Ohio Judicial Conference Judicial Advisory Group, Board of Trustees of the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges, and the Executive Committee of the Ohio Probate Judges Association.
