Guest Opinion: Doylestown Township Supervisor Nancy Santacecilia should resign

Doylestown Township supervisor Nancy Santacecilia addresses comments during supervisors meeting Tuesday that she should resign over a political mailer she sent through Central Bucks School District's interoffice mail in October.

Editor's Note: This is an open letter to Doylestown Township Supervisor Nancy Santacecilia, who was identified on security camera footage as sending political flyers, the content of which some have described as "hateful" and "homophobic", through Central Bucks School District's interoffice mail to its employees.

We are Bucks Voices, a Bucks County voter engagement group with over 1,750 members. We are not affiliated with any political party. Our mission is to inform, engage and mobilize our community to realize the ideals of our democracy: a government that represents all of us and creates a progressive and just society where everyone can realize their full potential.

Our vision is that our elected officials honor their oaths of office, discharge their duties with integrity, and work to strengthen and improve our government so that it becomes a fully realized representative democracy, one that is inclusive of and sustained by all.

We express grave concern, Ms. Santacecilia, about your fitness for the office of Doylestown Township Supervisor. By distributing a race-baiting homophobic flyer within the school district and the Doylestown community, you committed an unethical and deceitful act, unworthy of an elected public official. Your action, however local, however individualized, contributes to the unraveling of our democracy and our trust in our government. Worst yet, your act of spreading white supremacists' talking points is an unforgivable attempt at “mainstreaming” this type of hate speech. You are doing great harm to our community, you cannot continue to sit as a Doylestown Township Supervisor, the community does not condone your egregious abusive behavior nor do we support your abhorrent divisive rhetoric.

We hope you will heed all the calls for your resignation.
