Memorial Day is a time of remembrance honoring those who gave their lives in service to this country.

The following is a list of parades, services and other events in communities across Greater Akron in honor of Memorial Day:

Saturday, May 27

Shalersville Township: 10 a.m. parade will start at Mary Ellen Road to state Route 303 to Riverside Cemetery for a service.

Sunday, May 28

Akron: 1 p.m. service at Civil War Memorial Chapel in Glendale Cemetery, 150 Glendale Ave.

Litchfield Township: 1:30 p.m. Remembrance walk will start at Town Hall and end at the cemetery.

Rittman: 10 a.m. service at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road. Rifle salute, wreath-laying service and music. Spectators should bring lawn chairs.

York Township: 3 p.m. parade will start at York Methodist Church. The route is from the church to York Township cemetery, 6800 Norwalk Road. There will be a service at the cemetery.

Monday, May 29

Akron: An 11 a.m. service at Greenlawn Cemetery, 2580 Romig Road, at the Veterans Monument between the two mausoleums. Rifle salute, Taps, laying of wreaths at base of flag by Kenmore American Legion Post.

Alliance: 10 a.m. parade from Linden Avenue and East Main Street to Alliance City Cemetery on West Vine Street. Public ceremony at 11 a.m.

Aurora: 10:15 a.m. wreath-laying ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. Procession to follow leading to Aurora Cemetery. The public is encouraged to attend.

Bath Township: Noon observance at Veterans Memorial Park, southeast corner of Cleveland-Massillon and West Bath roads. Music from the Revere High School Band, flag presentations by Boy Scout Troop 385 and Bath Township fire and police departments, AMVET Post 176 Color Guard, and speeches from a Girl Scout from Troop 90190 and retired U.S. Airforce Col. James C. McClellan. Also scheduled is an aircraft flyover, a C-130H from the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station just after noon.

Beach City: 10 a.m. parade from the community park to Southlawn Cemetery for a ceremony.

Boston Heights: 8:30 a.m., the Woodridge High School band steps off from the fire station, marching to Fairview Cemetery, next to Village Hall, 45 E. Boston Mills Road. They will perform the National Anthem to start the 9 a.m. observance. Refreshments at Village Hall afterwards.

Brewster: 11 a.m. ceremony in the village square. The Fairless High School marching band will perform.

Brimfield Township: 8 a.m. service at Restland Cemetery.

Brunswick: 10 a.m. ceremony at Westview Cemetery.

Canal Fulton: 1 p.m. parade steps off from Lindsay Concrete, 6845 Erie Ave., goes north on Canal Street, turns onto East Market Street and ends at City Hall for a ceremony, with rifle squadron and Northwest High School band.

Canton: 10 a.m. parade steps off from the McKinley Downtown Campus (formerly known as Timken High School), travels west on Tuscarawas Street, north on Elgin Avenue and concludes with an observance at the McKinley Monument.

Clinton: Parade lines up at 10:30 a.m. and steps off at 11 a.m. from Orchard Hill Church, 2545 W. Comet Road, ending at Clinton Cemetery for a program.

Copley Township: There is no parade. At 11 a.m., there will be a small service at Copley Veterans Cemetery, 3770 Copley Road.

Creston: 11 a.m. parade marches to Maple Mound Cemetery for a service.

Cuyahoga Falls: 9 a.m. parade from  Lillis Drive and Portage Trail, marching east on Portage Trail and north on Fourth Street to Oakwood Drive for an 11 a.m. ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery. Additionally, more than 400 full-size flags will be flown above Northlawn Memorial Gardens, 4724 State Road, in memory of veterans buried there. More than 2,500 small flags will be placed on graves. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday. Hot dogs and refreshments available.

Dalton: 10 a.m. parade starts at Dalton High School and proceeds to Church Street and the cemetery for a service.

Doylestown: Weather permitting, starting at 9 a.m. area veterans and military groups begin at the doughboy statue in the square and will march to cemeteries in the village and back to the square.

East Canton: 10 a.m. parade will begin at the corner of Browning and Noble streets. It travels west on Center Street, south on state Route 44, west on Church, north on Plum and east on Noble.

Fairlawn: 9 a.m. tribute at Memorial Monument in Bicentennial Park across from City Hall, 3486 S. Smith Road.

Garrettsville: 9 a.m. ceremony at Veterans Memorial on Maple Avenue. 9:30 a.m. parade from Baptist Cemetery to Park Cemetery on Center Street, followed by a service.

Granger Township: 9 a.m. parade from Highland Middle School, 3880 Ridge Road, to Fairview Cemetery on Wilbur Road, followed by a short program.

Green: The annual pancake breakfast will be at Fire Station No. 1, 4200 Massillon Road, from 7-10 a.m. Donations will be accepted to benefit Furnace Street Mission Safety Forces Support Center.

The parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Green High School, 1474 Boettler Road. It travels east on Boettler Road to Massillon Road south (south bound lanes only) to Steese Road west to Green Intermediate School, back to the Green High School parking lot via Bulldog Boulevard.

There will be a short ceremony at noon at Green Veterans Memorial Park, 1900 Steese Road. Two local veterans will be recognized. Parking for the ceremony is available at Fire Station No. 1 (handicap parking only), John Torok Senior/Community Center, Queen of Heaven Church and the Anthony Funeral Home. Please note Steese Road will be shut down to traffic during the ceremony. The Car Show and Picnic will begin immediately following the ceremony and end at 3 p.m. Parking for participating vehicles begins at 7:30 a.m. at the John Torok Center, 4224 Massillon Road.

Hinckley Township: 9 a.m. parade starts at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 1088 Ridge Road, and proceeds to the Veterans Memorial Park for a wreath ceremony and moment of silence, then on to the administration building, 1410 Ridge Road, for the remaining program.

Hiram: A parade steps off from Hiram Christian Church at noon and will proceed to Fairview Cemetery for a ceremony.  A public reception with light refreshments will be held at Hiram College's Koritansky Hall following the ceremony.

Hudson: 10 a.m. parade assembles on Milford Road and proceeds east on state Route 303 and north on state Route 91. A ceremony will be held at Markillie Cemetery, 410 N. Main St., immediately after the parade. From 6:30-8:30 p.m., a Hudson Bandstand concert will be held on the Gazebo Green, corner of Church Street and Route 91.

Kent: 10 a.m. parade, starting at North Water and East Main streets downtown, includes a brief service on Main Street bridge, ending at Standing Rock Cemetery for an 11 a.m. ceremony.

Lakemore: 11 a.m. parade from Springfield High School, 1880 Canton Road, down Sanitarium Road, turn on Lake Road, and ending at the Memorial Triangle, followed by a service.

Lodi: 9 a.m. parade from American Legion Post 523, 120 Bank St., through town to Woodlawn Cemetery, then back to the square for a ceremony.

Marlboro Township: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch in the square at the fire station, 9587 Edison St. Parade will be at 1 p.m. Lineup will start at noon on St. Peters Church Road. A memorial service will follow at Marlboro Cemetery immediately after the parade.

Massillon: Parade at 9:30 a.m. steps off at Eighth Street Northeast and Lincoln Way East, turns left on Erie Street, left on Tremont, ending at Veterans Memorial Park on First Street Southeast. Ceremony in Duncan Plaza will follow.

Medina: 10:15 a.m. parade from Medina County Courthouse on Public Square to Spring Grove Cemetery, followed by a ceremony.

Mogadore: 10 a.m. parade will begin at the intersection of James Street and South Cleveland Avenue.  It will then proceed down South Cleveland Avenue and turn onto Mogadore Road towards the Greenwood Cemetery, where a brief ceremony will take place.

Navarre: 1 p.m. parade steps off on Canal Street West, in front of Village Hall, then travels up Main Street to Wooster Street, turning left on Columbiana Street to the cemetery. The observance begins after the parade.

New Franklin: 10 a.m. parade begins at Grace Bible Church, 5781 Manchester Road, and goes south to Manchester Cemetery, 1030 W. Nimisila Road. A remembrance ceremony will be held at the cemetery at the conclusion of the parade. At 9 a.m. before the parade lines up, Grace Bible Church will once again host a free pancake breakfast for all parade participants.

North Canton: 9 a.m. parade from near Dogwood Park on Seventh Street Northeast, travels west on Seventh to North Main Street, then south on North Main, east on Maple Street and ends at Bitzer Park, 200 S. Main St., where there will be a memorial ceremony immediately after the parade.

Northfield Center Township: 10 a.m. parade at St. Barnabas Church, 9451 Brandywine Road, heading north on Olde Eight Road to the Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery, followed by a service.

Orrville:  9 a.m. parade from the American Legion on Market Street, west on Market to Crown Hill Road and north to Crown Hill Cemetery for a 10 a.m. service.

Ravenna: At 10 a.m., a parade from the old high school on Clinton Street to the Veterans Memorial on Chestnut Street for a ceremony at the courthouse lawn. A service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Richfield: A parade will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the Richfield Historical Society and march to West Richfield Cemetery, 4219 Broadview Road, where a service will be held.

Rittman: 10:30 a.m. parade from Erie and South Main streets, marching downtown to the IGA shopping center on North Main Street. Ceremony will follow at Rittman Cemetery on Decourcey Road.

Rootstown Township: 10 a.m. parade travels from Loretta Drive, eastbound on Tallmadge Road to end at Homeland Cemetery.

Seville:  1 p.m. parade steps off in front of First Baptist Church, 22 E. Main St., and marches to Mound Hill Cemetery.

Sharon Township: 9 a.m. parade starts at Sharon Corporate Park and ends at the gazebo with a ceremony.

Shreve: 9:30 a.m. parade will begin at the elementary school on Market Street, ending at Sweethaven store, 405 W South St. A program at Oak Grove Cemetery will follow.

Smithville: 8:15 a.m. parade starts at North Milton Street, marches along Main Street to the Veterans Memorial, followed by a service.

Spencer: 9 a.m. parade starts at village offices and ends at Spencer Cemetery, followed by a service.

Stow: 10:15 a.m. program at Stow Cemetery, 3162 Kent Road, with music and readings.

Suffield Township: 10 a.m. parade from Old Waterloo Road between Congress Lake Road and Catherine Road, crosses state Route 43, and ends at Suffield Elementary School/Lions Park, 1128 Waterloo Road. Children are encouraged to decorate and ride bicycles in the parade. Memorial following parade at 11 a.m. at school.

Tallmadge: A 10 a.m. parade will assemble at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, then travel down West Avenue to Tallmadge Circle. A memorial service will be held at the cemetery immediately following the parade. The services include a ceremony, the placing of the wreath for fallen veterans, a rifle volley and the playing of Taps.

Twinsburg: 10:30 a.m. parade from Twinsburg High School, 10084 Ravenna Road, to Veterans Monument on the square in Twinsburg Township, followed by a service.

Valley City / Liverpool Township: 11 a.m. parade starts at the township offices, ending at the VFW Hall on Center Road where there will be a brief ceremony. As always, this will be a solemn/silent parade.

Wadsworth: 10:30 a.m. parade from in front of the American Legion and VFW Hall on Main Street, ending at Woodlawn Cemetery for a service. The American Legion will be serving a Memorial Day breakfast.

Waynesburg: 9 a.m. parade starts at the American Legion, 166 E. Lisbon St. Services at 10 a.m. at Sandy Valley Cemetery.

Westfield Center: 11 a.m. parade steps off from North Leroy Park, and goes to Westfield Village Cemetery for a service.

Wooster: 9 a.m. parade from Wayne County Fairgrounds, heading east on West Liberty Street to Public Square, south on Market Street to Madison Avenue and the overpass bridge. Services follow at the Veterans Memorial in Wooster Cemetery.
