Guide to Hawaii athletes in the Olympic Games

Jul. 18—Athletes with Hawaii ties are competing in 10 different sports at the Olympics, which start this week in Tokyo. Some sports, like volleyball, are contested over nearly the entire two weeks of the games. Others, like skateboarding, are staged for just one or two days. (Another sport, wrestling, has no current Hawaii athlete, but 2012 freestyle bronze medalist Clarissa Chun, a Roosevelt graduate, is an assistant coach for the U.S. women's team.)

For more schedule details and TV viewing and streaming information, see.—BASKETBALL Hawaii ties : Hugh Hogland ('Iolani ) is on the host Japanese team. Japan is in group C with Argentina, Slovenia, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Puerto Rico and China for the prelim round. ... Maj Forsberg, a former University of Hawaii guard, is a referee in the women's competition.

Dates : July 24-Aug. 8 ; men's medal games Aug. 7 BEACH VOLLEYBALL Hawaii tie : Taylor Crabb (Punahou ) is partnered with Jake Gibb, who at 45 is the oldest Olympic beach volleyball player ever. Crabb's brother, Trevor, was also in contention for the Olympics with his partner, Tri Bourne. The Crabbs' uncle, Tony Crabb, was an assistant coach on the U.S. men's indoor team that won the Olympic gold medal in 1984.

Dates : July 31-Aug. 6 INDOOR VOLLEYBALL Hawaii ties : Micah Christenson (Kamehameha ), Erik Shoji (Punahou ) and Kawika Shoji ('Iolani ) return from the bronze-medal-winning U.S. team of 2016. Christenson and Erik Shoji start at setter and libero, and Kawika Shoji is the backup setter. ... Tamari Miyashiro (Kalani ), a member of the silver-medal-winning 2012 U.S. women's team, is an assistant coach for the American women.

KARATE Hawaii tie : Honolulu-born Sakura Kokumai started in karate in Hawaii when she was 7. Now she is a member of the first U.S. Olympic team in the sport.

Dates : Aug. 4-7 Schedule note : Kokumai specializes in kata, which starts with elimination rounds Aug. 4 and concludes with medal competitions Aug. 5.

RUGBY Hawaii tie : Martin Iosefo (Leilehua ) took up rugby when he was in Montana, where he was playing college football. This is his second Olympics with the U.S. team.

Dates : July 26-31, men's medal matches July 28 SKATEBOARDING Hawaii ties : Heimana Reynolds (Mid-Pacific ), who grew up in Aina Haina, made the park competition squad of the U.S. team in skateboarding's Olympic debut. Jordyn Barratt (Haleiwa ) is on the American women's team for park.

Dates : July 24-25 (street ) and Aug. 3-4 (park )

Schedule note : The prelims and finals are all in one day for each gender and subcategory ; Barratt competes Aug. 3 and Reynolds on Aug. 4, with prelims starting at 2 p.m. and finals at 5 :30 p.m.

SOFTBALL Hawaii ties : Former University of Hawaii players Stacey Porter, Rachel Lack, Kaia Parnaby and Clare Warwick are on the Australia roster. Porter, 38, is playing in her third Olympics and has won silver and bronze medals. (There was no softball in the 2012 and 2016 Games.)

SURFING Hawaii ties : World champions Carissa Moore (Punahou ) and John John Florence (Haleiwa ) represent the U.S. in surfing's Olympics debut. Florence is rehabbing from knee surgery. ... Tatiana Weston-Webb (Kauai resident ) is on the Brazil team and Mahina Maeda, born on Oahu and a Sunset Beach resident, is surfing for Japan.

Dates : July 25-Aug. 2, schedule dependent on waves SWIMMING Hawaii tie : Taeyanna Adams is a Hawaii island resident who trains at Kona Community Aquatic Center and is competing in the 100-meter breaststroke. She is the flagbearer and competing for her native Micronesia.

Dates : July 24-Aug. 1 WATER POLO Hawaii ties : Five former UH players are on three women's teams : Dagmar Genee and Maartje Keuning (Netherlands ), Monika Eggens and Elyse Lemay-Lavoie (Canada ) and Jordan Wedderburn (South Africa ). Eggens is team captain. ... Jesse Smith is also a captain of the U.S. men's team. Smith was born in Kailua-Kona, won a silver medal in Athens in 2008, and is competing in his record-tying fifth Olympics for water polo.
