Guide to Shine Mural Festival in St. Petersburg: Here’s what you need to know
A beloved St. Petersburg tradition returns this fall: the Shine Mural Festival, running from Oct. 13 to Oct. 22. Now in its ninth year, the festival will feature 14 more murals created by local, national and international artists, as well as three community murals. It’s always a festive time to see new artwork as it’s being created. There are also events, activities and more art on display as part of the festival.
Here’s what you need to know.
How to tour the murals
You can visit the artists while they’re still painting, and since many of them are on the Pinellas Trail, you could bike, skate or park and walk.
You can also take a guided Shine bike tour through Florida CraftArt — but you must bring your own bike. It includes more than 30 murals and background on the artists and their inspiration. It covers an approximately 22-block radius, covering the back streets and alleys of four arts districts. The tours are happening at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Oct. 22; and at 3 p.m. Oct. 21-22. $40. A portion of the proceeds fund future Shine murals. Once the festival has ended, through the magic of technology, folks can take a free, self-guided audio tour of the completed murals with the PixelStix app. You can also use this app to tour Shine murals from previous years.

Events and activities
All City: Shine Kickoff Event: Presented by the Vitale Bros. and Diana Bryson, this weekendlong event celebrates the origins of graffiti with live painting, Letterheadz extension and tag wall curated by Tasko, tunes by DJ Hogie, cocktails from Brewed Awakening and food by Vegan Halal Cart and Nah Dogs. The party kicks off from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and continues from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with the Art of Lettering workshop for kids from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (space is limited). Dark/Space: Curated by Michelle Tannu and Chad Mize and held at Space, this exhibition celebrates the darker-themed side of art, drawing inspiration from punk, metal, horror and science fiction.
