Gulf Islands National Seashore to reopen following Hurricane Ian

Gulf Islands National Seashore started to reopen the Johnson Beach area in Perdido Key, Opal Beach and the Okaloosa area at noon Thursday.

The Fort Pickens Area, including the Fort Pickens Campground, will reopen at 7 a.m. Friday.

Parks along the Gulf Island National Seashore were closed Sunday in anticipation of Hurricane Ian, but the storm ultimately tracked toward the central Florida Peninsula, well east of the Panhandle.

"Fortunately Gulf Islands National Seashore did not sustain damages due to Hurricane Ian," Superintendent Darrell Echols said in a statement. “The Fort Pickens Area did have a substantial amount of sand on the roads and will require time to clean up. Our priority is to ensure the safest environment possible for park visitors and staff."
