Gun confiscated: Nanuet HS student brought weapon to campus, superintendent reports

A Nanuet High School student brought a handgun to school Monday, which was confiscated “without incident,” schools Superintendent Kevin McCahill said in a statement.

Administrators were told Monday afternoon that a student had a gun, according to Clarkstown police, and the gun was found around 3 p.m.

Police said no threats were made by the student, and the gun was found during a search of the student's belongings.

“It is important for the community to know that this report was made by an individual who followed our Emergency Response protocols which encourages immediate reports of any potential threats to the safety of our members of our school community,” McCahill's statement said.

McCahill did not specify if the information came from a student or member of the staff or faculty. Police said it was an "anonymous tip."

School administration, Clarkstown Police and the School Resource Officer investigated.

“The weapon was secured without incident,” the statement said. The student was no longer on campus. “I can assure you that the student in question will not be present in school pending disciplinary action, which may include criminal charges,” McCahill said.

Clarkstown police on Tuesday said the student had been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, both felonies.

Clarkstown police are continuing the investigation.

“The Nanuet School District has a zero-tolerance policy against unlawful behavior in our schools,” McCahill said.
