Gun-detecting K-9 starts new job patrolling Carolina Place Mall shopping center

Carolina Place Mall has new help from a special K-9 working to keep shoppers safe.

The specially trained gun-detecting K-9, Carlos, is now patrolling the Pineville shopping center after several shootings at the mall last year.

“Chosen for his friendly demeanor, shoppers will notice the dog, but likely be unaware that he has even scanned them for firearms,” Brookfield Properties, which owns Carolina Place, said in a news release.

The specially trained German shepherd will join the mall’s security partner, Andy Frain Services. Carlos will patrol with his handler to detect firearms. The idea is to quickly and safely resolve any incidents where they may have made their way onto the property.

“We welcome Carlos and his handler to Carolina Place as part of a proactive advancement in our security program,” said Susan Barwick, the senior general manager of Carolina Place. She went on to say “We are constantly evolving our security protocols and the new canine weapon detection program is an added safety measure to offer extra comfort to our shopping center community.”

Firearms are banned at Carolina Place Mall.

John Brannon is the owner of Shallow Creek Kennels, which is where Carlos is from.

“Our extensive training program is built on years of law enforcement experience to ensure the highest quality in service, security and care for the dogs,” Brannon said. “Weapon detection and deterrence is a critical component to safety and prevention.”

Before coming to Pineville, The State newspaper reports Carlos was working at the Columbiana Centre mall in Columbia. In April, 15 people were hurt in a shooting there. In response, authorities brought in Carlos last month to sniff out guns. We have reached out, asking if they have a different dog on patrol now.
