Gun found at Lancaster SC school on first day of classes, officials say

A gun was found in a student’s book bag at a Lancaster campus in South Carolina Monday, on the first day of school, officials said.

The pistol was seized from a student’s bag at South Middle School after a tip was received by school officials, according to a statement from the Lancaster County School District.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation, sheriff’s office spokesman Doug Barfield told The Herald.

The school principal and assistant principal identified the student and found the gun, according to Bryan Vaughan, director of safety and transportation for the school district.

The student was suspended from school, district officials said in a statement. The student could face up to a year expulsion after going through a disciplinary process, the district said in the statement.

“Any student caught in possession of a firearm is subject to a full calendar year expulsion from school under state law,” the statement said.

School officials commended the tip information that was given to administrators.

Monday was the first day of the 2022-2023 school year at districts in Lancaster, York, and Chester counties.
