Gun found in student’s possession at Cumberland County middle school

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– A gun was found in the possession of a student at a Cumberland County middle school, according to the superintendent.

Cumberland Valley Superintendent Mark Blanchard said Tuesday that the gun was found in a student’s backpack at Eagle View Middle School during the school day.

The Silver Spring Township Police Department stated that the 15-year-old had a loaded semi-automatic handgun in his backpack.

No threats were made and the gun was never displayed.

“While no threats were made or students harmed, this issue hits far too close to home and we are taking this extremely seriously,” Blanchard said in a statement. ” The safety of our students and staff are our number one priority.”

The gun was discovered during an “unrelated routine discipline issue” that happened in the office of the school, Blanchard said.

The student will not be returning to the building in the foreseeable future and Blanchard says the district will pursue the most aggressive action allowed by the school code and law.

Cumberland Valley Police Department and Silver Spring Township Police Department responded to the incident.
