Gun scare forces lockdown at Wilson Memorial High School

FISHERSVILLE — Fearing a gun had been brought onto the campus of Wilson Memorial High School by a student, on Thursday morning students there were placed on a brief lockdown, the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said.

At about 9:30 a.m., the sheriff's office was on a call for service for a medical issue involving a juvenile in the Stuarts Draft area, a press release said. Deputies determined the juvenile and a second juvenile were involved in a burglary in the Crimora area where a firearm was stolen.

The sheriff's office said the second juvenile is a student at Wilson Memorial High School and was in school Thursday. After the school was placed on the lockdown, deputies located the suspected juvenile.

The firearm that was reportedly stolen was not on found school property.

“At no time was the school or the public in any immediate danger throughout this incident," Sheriff Donald Smith said in the release.

Miranda Ball, a spokesperson for Augusta County Public Schools, said the lockdown lasted 15 minutes and that students were released at 10:20 a.m.

"We were able to resume teaching with a regular schedule once the lockdown was released," Ball said. "This situation was isolated to WMHS and did not impact other schools in the area."

Charges are pending against the juveniles.

The press release from the sheriff's office did not state if a gun has been recovered during the investigation.
