Gunfire kills teen at vigil for 18-year-old who also died in shooting, Georgia cops say

A 17-year-old was killed and a 16-year-old and 11-year-old were injured while attending a candlelight vigil for a shooting victim, police in Georgia said.

People gathered Sunday, Nov. 27 to mourn 18-year-old Taneaious McCune, who was killed in a shooting as he tried to break into a home, DeKalb County police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. McCune was one of four people involved in the break-in incident on Friday, Nov. 25, the outlet reported.

Police told Atlanta News First the resident who shot McCune would not face charges.

During the community vigil for McCune, 17-year-old Ian Hagerty was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, 11 Alive reported. Two other boys, a 16-year-old and an 11-year-old, were injured by gunfire at the vigil in front of an apartment complex.

“It’s sad, we can’t even mourn the death of someone without something else occurring. It’s really sad,” said a DeKalb County resident who asked not to be named told 11 Alive. “It’s horrible that it happened because there was plenty of kids out here and just threatening the lives of innocent children and innocent people and the elderly, these are elderly who stay in the front here.”

The 16-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, and the 11-year-old had a gunshot wound to his finger, Atlanta News First reported.

The suspect fled from the vigil on foot, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, and DeKalb County police have not announced any arrests.

DeKalb County is just east of Atlanta.
