Gunmen kill prominent Rohingya leader

A prominent Rohingya leader and human rights champion, who has previously been invited to the White House and United Nations has been killed by unidentified gunmen at a refugee camp in Bangladesh.

The shooting took place on Wednesday (September 29).

Mohib Ullah, who was in his late 40s, was one of the most high profile advocates for the stateless Rohingya, a muslim minority that have faced persecution for generations.

He led the largest of one of several community groups of Rohingya to emerge after 730,000 of them fled the crackdowns in Myanmar in 2017.

Mohib Ullah's group, the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights group, made its name documenting atrocities the minority suffered during the crackdown, which the U.N. has said was carried out with genocidal intent.

And at the camps, he would go door to door building a tally of killings which were shared with international investigators.

He previously told Reuters his work made a target and he had received death threats.

The murder comes following months of worsening violence in Kutupalong, the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox Bazaar.
