Gunnar Cox named new head football coach at West Nassau High School

For the first time in nearly a decade, West Nassau football is getting a new coach.

The Callahan school hired Gunnar Cox as its new head football coach ahead of the 2023 season, the athletic department announced Friday.

Cox, a graduate of nearby rival Yulee High School, had previously served as defensive coordinator at Hilliard. He also played college football at Jacksonville University.

At West Nassau, he takes over for Rickey Armstrong, who stepped down as the Warriors' coach after nine seasons. Armstrong compiled a 51-43 record during his tenure at the school, including four consecutive trips to the Florida High School Athletic Association regional playoffs from 2017 and 2020. West Nassau ended last season at 2-8.

Cox is the latest of several coaching hires during a busy off-season in Northeast Florida football. Among other notable moves, longtime Bartram Trail head coach Darrell Sutherland stepped down a month ago and was replaced by Cory Johns from Nature Coast Tech; Jackson's Christopher Foy departed for Oakleaf, taking a permanent coaching role after Knights athletic director Marcus Miller had served in an interim capacity for the fall of 2022; and Fleming Island's Damenyum Springs resigned after eight years, replaced by Bartram Trail assistant Chad Parker.

This is a developing story.
