Gunshots to be heard in Glassboro Monday as Honor Guard preps for fallen officer's service

You may hear gunshots in the Glassboro area Monday morning, officials are warning.

The Gloucester County Honor Guard is practicing for the closing ceremony of a fallen officer's funeral service on the campus of Rowan University.

Why are you hearing gunshots in Glassboro?

The honor guard's preparation will include practicing a rifle salute around 9:30 a.m., the Glassboro Police Department said.

The rifle salute will be heard again Wednesday at the end of services for Deptford Township Police Department Officer Bobby Shisler. The 27-year-old's services will be held on the campus of Rowan University.

Shisler died May 7 from injuries sustained in a March 10 struggle with a suspect.

The officer was shot while making a traffic stop on Delsea Drive; a foot pursuit ensued and Shisler struggled with Mitchell Negron, resulting in both men being shot.

Negron died at the scene.

Shisler had been treated at Cooper University Hospital since the incident. Officials have released few details about how the two men were shot. As per state law with any death involving an encounter with law enforcement, the incident is under investigation by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.

Last week, Shisler's body was taken from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office via honorable transfer to Boucher Funeral Home in Deptford, where hundreds of supporters, friends and family gathered to honor the lifelong township resident.

Shisler was a 2014 Deptford High School graduate who played baseball and football at the school.

Shisler's internment will be private, but his service at the college is expected to draw thousands of law enforcement, first responders, family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Wilson Hall, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the university said.

Rowan is asking employees on the north side of Route 322 to work from home that day and is restricting access to essential workers only.

Most buildings, facilities and parking lots on the north side of Route 322 will be closed that day.
