Gwinnett business owner hopes to generate generational wealth with UPS store

On this Juneteenth holiday we are sharing inspirational stories of success.

Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston talked to a Gwinnett County man, who stuck to his dreams of one day opening his own business.

Tecumseh Peete started out as a delivery driver for Mail Boxes Etc. He said that’s when the idea was planted to stay in the driver’s seat, and one day own his own business. Peete drove the Mail Boxes Etc. truck for more than a decade — preparing for the future and until he was ready.

“Oprah Winfrey said, I think, ‘Luck is where preparation intersects with opportunity,’” Peete said. “You go through your corporate jobs so on and so forth, and now, we were at that intersection where I was prepared, and opportunity arose,” he said.

Peete opened a branch of The UPS Store store four years ago in Lawrenceville on Scenic Highway South.

The company said Peete manages the business so well that it’s become a place new store owners visit to learn how to get it right.

“The biggest thing to me is the preparation, and the attention to detail that I provided prior to opening this store,” Peete said.

Customer Howard Small said that he has used other The UPS Store locations, but likes Peete’s the best.

“I was immediately drawn to Tecumseh. His personality is very warm and inviting,” Small said.

Peete said his goal it to maintain his business and make it the best location.

“I can build that generational wealth that was denied African Americans for so many years,” Peete said. “After 10 years, I may re-up for another 10 years, and at that point, I look to retire.”
