Gwinnett County election officials, poll workers optimistic ahead of Election Day

With polls opening in less than 14 hours in Gwinnett County, poll workers and election officials are feeling optimistic.

Channel 2′s Matt Johnson spoke to poll workers, who said they were able to learn everything in a day.

The poll workers told Channel 2 Action News they felt confident that they can take what they learned at the Mountain Park Depot on Monday and hopefully apply it to a smooth election day Tuesday.

“I really feel like we’re all prepared,” one poll worker said.

Counties across the country are dealing with poll worker shortages this year.

RJ Matthews is a retired Marine who said he didn’t hesitate to serve his country again.

Elections workers in Gwinnett County held three poll worker hiring events this weekend, with the last one wrapping up Monday evening.

People can earn up to $390 working Election Day by making sure each vote is cast smoothly.

“We’re excited that individuals are still wanting to work last minute,” assistant elections supervisor Shantell Black said.

Black said they wanted to make sure they were covered in case of people not being able to make it Tuesday.

“We’ve had people call out because of the flu. We’ve been able to staff those positions right back due to those hiring even right here.” she told Channel 2 Action News.

She says that so far, no serious issues have been reported during early voting, and she’s confident staffing won’t be an issue tomorrow either.

Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Volunteers will start showing up at around 5:30 a.m.
