  • Gwyneth Paltrow is calling out people who shame women for their cosmetic choices.

  • “When we judge people, it’s coming from something unhealed in ourselves,” the 49-year-old actress and wellness mogul said this week.

  • In fact, Paltrow isn’t hurt by judgmental comments anymore: “They must be in pain,” she says of people who try to hurt her self-esteem.

Gwyneth Paltrow is done paying attention to rude comments about her approach to aging—or any made about other women, for that matter.

Speaking to Shape this week, the 49-year-old Goop founder took beauty- and body-shamers to task. “I think it’s important to recognize that when we judge people, it’s coming from something unhealed in ourselves,” Paltrow explained. In fact, it “has nothing to do with them.”

“In my 20s, when I was being judged, it’d hurt my feelings,” the Iron Man actress continued. “But now I feel compassion and think that they must be in pain.”

No one has the right to shame women for making their own choices, she argues; if someone opts for a cosmetic procedure (like Botox), like Paltrow has, they shouldn’t be shamed for it. “We’re aspiring to do the things that make us feel great. Sometimes that’s eating really clean. And sometimes that’s getting rid of deep lines,” she said.

“A dermatologist I follow on Instagram made the point that no one is going to get some special prize or something on their epitaph for never trying injectables,” Paltrow added.

Recently, the wellness mogul has been opening up about the confidence that comes with age—and the fact that she doesn’t plan to stop seeking out anti-aging procedures. “Unfortunately, we’re always looking at ourselves with a critical eye,” Paltrow told People last month. “I would love to get to a place where I don’t do that anymore. I want to show up for myself in a more loving way, because it’s all going south from here! There’s nothing we can do about it.”

“I would love to be one of those amazing French women that never does anything and doesn’t color their hair while letting nature do its thing,” Paltrow told The Hollywood Reporter in March, “but I’m probably a little too vain to back off that much. I’ll always try to find a balance of looking like myself and being healthy with a little help here and there.”

But no matter how she feels about herself, the actress is done listening to rude, pointless comments. “I think there is this incredible freedom that comes with a woman in her 40s, and understanding that this is who I am,” the wellness guru said in 2019. “I’ve stopped worrying so much about what people think of me.”

And if the recent renaissance of famous women fighting back against age-shaming culture, from Sarah Jessica Parker to Andie MacDowell, Tracee Ellis Ross to Padma Lakshmi, is any indication, Paltrow won’t have to pity people who judge others much longer.
