H.S. basketball: Abilene High boys subdue Lubbock High, keep playoff hopes alive

LUBBOCK – Abilene High broke open a two-point game with a big second quarter, and the Eagles held on to beat Lubbock High 57-42 in a District 4-5A game Friday.

AHS led 15-13 after the first quarter, but Jake Breckenridge scored eight of his team-high 10 points in the second quarter as the Eagles outscored the Westerners 21-12 to lead 36-25 at halftime.

The Eagles finished Lubbock High off, outscoring the Westerners 16-7 in the final quarter.

Chris Motl added nine points for the Eagles (11-14 overall, 3-5 district), while Eric Salazar and Brooks Reese had eight each. Brenner Paul and Bryce Neves also had seven apiece.

Chris Vasquez led Lubbock High (3-24, 0-8) with 12 points.

AHS is tied with Lubbock-Cooper and Wylie for the final playoff berth with four games left.

AHS plays Lubbock Coronado on Tuesday at Eagle Gym The Mustangs are tied with Abilene Cooper for second – two games back of front-running Lubbock Monterey.

Jim Ned fends off Coahoma

At Tuscola, Wyatt Nickson and Carter Wood combined for 23 points as Jim Ned beat Coahoma 54-42 in a District 6-3A game.

Nickson scored a game-high 12 points, while Wood had 11 for Jim Ned (18-10, 7-2). Three others – Colt Lindsey, Hank Ritter and Carter Lange – had eight each.

Billy Bailey and Ryan Shiflett led Coahoma (14-11, 4-5) with 10 points each, while Boyd Cox had nine, and Landon Wells had eight.

Coahoma is at home vs. Merkel on Monday. Jim Ned is at San Angelo Grape Creek.

Knox City rolls past Rotan

At Rotan, Devin Guillory scored a game-high 21 points to lead Knox City past Rotan 64-32 in a District 15-1A game.

Bryson Callaway added 14 points, and J.C. Utley had 11 for the Greyhounds (17-8, 7-1).

Jordan Daniel led the Yellowhammers (12-14, 4-4) with 11 points, and Jaxon Warren had eight.

The Greyhounds play Roby on Tuesday in Knox City, while Rotan plays at Aspermont.

GIRLS

Lubbock High tops Lady Eagles

At Lubbock, Izzy Palmer and Faith Ford combined for 34 points as Lubbock High beat Abilene High 49-29 in a District 4-5A game.

Palmer led the Lady Westerners (20-12, 4-5) with a game-high 18 points, while Ford followed with 16. Kamille Reynolds added 12.

Kayley Washington led the Lady Eagles (13-18, 1-8) with eight points, and Taryn Moore had six.

Palmer and Reynolds combined for 22 points as Lubbock High rolled to a 27-12 halftime lead.

The Lady Westerners lead Abilene Cooper (19-12, 3-6) by a game for the final playoff berth with three league games remaining.

Cooper plays at front-running Lubbock Monterey on Tuesday, while Lubbock High remains home to play Wylie. Cooper plays at Lubbock High on Feb. 3 in Abilene. LHS finishes at home against Monterey on Feb. 7, while Cooper is at Coronado.

Lubbock High won the first meeting with Cooper 73-60 in Lubbock.

Honeybees sting Graham

At Stephenville, Mya Wilson and Lillie Skiles combined for 17 points as No. 9 Stephenville throttled Graham 35-9 in a District 6-4A game.

Wilson had a game-high nine points for the Honeybees (28-3, 5-1), while Skiles had eight. Brinley Hall had five.

Hannah Williams led Graham (2-20, 0-5) with four points.

Stephenville has a bye on Tuesday before going to Brownwood on Friday.

No. 2 Jim Ned stymies Coahoma

At Tuscola, Riley Grohman scored a game-high 21 points as No. 2 Jim Ned beat Coahoma 56-20 in a District 6-3A game.

Ashlynn Galvin added 12 points, and Gracee Cooley had 11 for Jim Ned (25-1, 11-0).

Isabella Cox led Coahoma with 12 points.

Jim Ned, which has won 20 consecutive games, plays at San Angelo Grape Creek on Monday. Coahoma takes on No. 19 Merkel.

Gorman turns away Lingleville

At Gorman, Esmeralda Ervin and Jesenia Rodriguez scored 11 points each to guide No. 6 Gorman past Lingleville 47-35 in a District 19-1A game.

Delila Crain added eight points, and Jordan Hampton had six for the Lady Panthers (28-2, 8-1).

Araceli Rangel led Lingleville (10-11, 6-4) with a game-high 20 points, and Ciklai Rangel had 10.

Gorman plays at No. 1 Huckabay (31-2, 9-0) on Tuesday. Huckabay beat the Lady Panthers 45-24 in the first meeting in Gorman.

Lingleville hosts No. 12 Gordon on Tuesday.
