Saint Joseph and Penn exhibited superior depth at Saturday’s Goshen Relays.

As a result, they are now exhibiting new team awards in their school trophy cases.

Saint Joseph strung together first-place finishes in four events and second place in four others to claim the Class B (small school) championship at one of Indiana’s largest high school boys track meets.

H.S. girls track: Penn best in the long run, but Valpo carries the day

Victories in the final three events of the meet — the sprint medley relay, 100-meter dash and 4 x 400 relay — enabled the Indians to surge into the lead, fighting off a tough challenge from Lakeland, 110-1/2 to 104.

Penn didn’t need such a dramatic finish in Class A (large schools), as the Kingsmen pulled ahead from the start, winning the opening 4 x 800 relay and a pair of field events, the long jump and discus.

A 1-2 finish in the 100-meter dash then sealed the deal at the end of the contest, with Kellen Watson clocking 11.37 and Josiah Williams recording a 11.53 for the Kingsmen.

The unranked Kingsmen finished with 129 points, upending No. 14-ranked Elkhart, 129-112.

Miserable, cold weather conditions tamped down performances in many events, though certainly not all.

In Class A, Penn’s Elijah Coker sailed 22 feet, 1 ¼ inches in the long jump, bettering the second-place effort from Elkhart’s Aalias Leonard (21-4 ½).

Elkhart’s 4 x 100 relay team of Zach Anderson, Leonard, Rodney Gates and Nathan Munson clocked a blistering 43.17, almost a full second better than any other competitor.

Penn’s Josh Handschu won the discus at 146-7, while Adams pole vaulter Ethan Schelstraete cleared 13 feet.

That’s the same height that was cleared by LaVille’s Lincoln Hulsey, a returning state medal-winner, in Class B.

Hulsey also ran a leg on LaVille’s first-place 4 x 200 relay squad.

Luke Kaufhold won the 110 high hurdles at Saturday's Goshen Relays as his team Saint Joseph won the Class B crown.

Saint Joseph’s Luke Kaufhold clocked a fine 15.23 to easily win the 110-meter high hurdles, and also handled a leg on a first-place sprint medley squad. LaVille's AJ Bedock won the discus at 149-6.

Washington’s 4 x 100 relay — Mekhi Wilson, Devon Devries, Damon Johnson and Jaquan Patton — was the only team to push the time recorded by Elkhart.  The Panthers clocked 44.10.

Riley’s Robert Nabieu was the Class A high-point award winner, with a victory in the sprint medley under his belt, among other place awards.

South Bend Riley’s Robert Nabieu, shown at last spring's Goshen Regional, was the high point winner in Class A at Saturday's Goshen Relays.
