H-E-B confirms land purchase in Rockwall

Aug. 9—Rockwall could be getting a H-E-B grocery store as the company confirmed it has purchased property inside the city.

HEB spokeswoman Nichelle Sullivan said Tuesday morning that reports indicating the San Antonio-based grocer had obtained 12 acres on the southwest corner of John King Boulevard and Interstate 30 were correct.

"We only can confirm about the purchase," Sullivan said, adding that there is no information available regarding plans for locating a store on the site. "For now we can just confirm the purchase."

Phil Wagner, president of the Rockwall Economic Development Association, said the agency typically does not involve itself in retail projects, instead focusing attention on manufacturing and office developments. However he was aware of the information regarding the purchase of the property.

"I don't when they plan to develop," Wagner said. "We have not had any conversations with them."

HEB has also recently purchased land in Prosper. With 420 stores, H-E-B is the largest Texas-based grocer, generating sales of more than $36 billion last year.
