H.S. Golf: Abilene Wylie's James shoots 81 on Day 1 of Region I-5A tournament

LUBBOCK – Wylie’s Casen James shots 10-over-par 81 on the first day of the Region I-5A boys golf tournament Wednesday at The Rawls Course.

Aledo’s Braylan Mahanay leads the tournament with a 70 – two shots better Burleson Centennial’s Blake Keen. Lubbock-Cooper’s Ace Ericsson is tied with Burleson Centennial’s Tallon Burgess for third (73). Lubbock Monterey’s Moore is tied with two others for fifth (74).

Lubbock-Cooper, the District 4-5A runner-up, leads the tournament with a 305. Burleson Centennial is second (310), while Grapevine and Aledo are tied for third (311). Amarillo Tascosa is two shots back. Lubbock Coronado, the District 4-5A champion, shot 318.

The final round will be Thursday at The Rawls. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a top-three team advance to the state tournament May 22-23 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.

James originally missed the cut for the region tournament, after finishing two shots behind Monterey’s Moore for the final at-large berth. Ericsson, playing for Lubbock-Cooper’s second team, got the other at-large spot.

However, Ericsson was pulled up to Lubbock-Cooper’s first team for the region tournament, opening up a spot for James.

Big Spring’s Harris leads 4A tourney

At Lubbock, Big Spring’s Reece Harris shot 3-under-par 68 to lead the Region I-4A boys golf tournament after the first round at Shadow Hills Golf Course.

Canyon Randall’s Wyatt Provence shot 71 to sit three strokes behind Harris. Three others are tied for third at 73. Brownwood’s Sir Jones is tied with one other for sixth with a 73.

Andrews Black leads the team competition with a 299. Canyon Randall is second (304), followed by Brownwood (305). Big Spring (6th, 315) and Stephenville (9th, 328) round out the Big Country teams.

The second and final round is Thursday at Shadow Hills. The top three teams and top three individuals not on a top-three team advance to the state tournament May 22-23 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.
