H.S. Golf: Brownwood boys take third at region, nab state berth

LUBBOCK − Brownwood shot 307 as a team Thursday to nab third place and the final state berth at the Region I-4A boys golf tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course.

Andrews Black won the team title with a two-day total 595 – two shots better than Canyon, which closed the gap after shooting low round of the day at 293. Brownwood finished with a 612 – 10 strokes better than Monahans.

Big Spring (7th, 641) and Stephenville (8th, 659) rounded out Big Country teams.

Canyon Randall’s Wyatt Provence shot 2-under-par 69 to win the individual title with a 140. Pampa’s Sawyer Burleson and Andrews Black’s Jorge Molinar III tied for second (142). Brownwood’s Sir Jones tied two others for fifth (146).

Big Spring’s Reece Harris, who led the tournament with a 68 after the first round, shot 81 on Thursday to finish tied for 8th with three others at 149.

Provence, Burleson and Monahan’s Konner Iglehart (4th, 145) nabbed the three at-large state berths.

The top three teams and top three players not a qualifying team move on to the Class 4A state tournament May 22-23 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.

Wylie's James wraps up 5A regional

LUBBOCK – Argyle’s Gaven Lane won a playoff with Burleson Centennial’s Blake Keen to win the Region I-5A boys golf tournament at The Rawls Course.

Lane shot 3-under-par 68 on the final day to tie Keen for first with a two-round total 144. Keen shot 72 each day.

Lubbock Coronado’s Preston Defriend also won a playoff with Aledo’s Braylan Mahanay and Argyle’s Ethan Payne for third. All three finished with a 149.

Argyle won the team title with a 605 – 20 shots better than Burleson Centennial. Lubbock-Cooper nabbed the third and final state berth with a 627 – a shot better than Aledo.

Defriend, Mahanay and Midlothian’s Landon Johnson won the three at-large state berths. Johnson beat two others in a playoff for that final spot.

Wylie’s Casen James shot 83 to finish the tournament with a 164. James was the lone representative for the Bulldogs.
