H.S. Gymnastics: Abilene High's Dantzler tied for first in region all-around after Round 1

LUBBOCK – Abilene High’s Joel Dantzler is tied for the boys’ all-around lead after the compulsory round at the Texas High School Gymnastics Association’s Region 3 Championships on Wednesday at Rock Solid Athletics.

Dantzler is tied with Lubbock High’s Will Brackeen for the all-around title with 58.400 points. Cooper’s Tristen Reyna is third (58.300), followed by San Angelo Central’s Logan Kypfer (57.600) and Cooper’s Evan Banks (56.400).

Reyna won two events – the floor (9.9) and pommel horse (9.9). Dantzler was second in the floor (9.8), while Banks and Brackeen tied for third (9.5). Dantzler tied Brackeen for second on the pommel horse (9.8), and Banks was fifth (9.3).

Dantzler won the horizontal bars (9.8). Kypfer and Brackeen tied for second (9.7). Reyna was fourth (9.6). Banks was sixth (9.2).

Banks won the vault (10.00), while Central’s Brady Stewart was second (9.9). Dantzler and Kypfer tied for third (9.8), and Reyna was tied with one other for fifth (9.7).

Brackeen won the rings (9.9), and Reyna was second (9.7). Dantzler tied one other for eighth (9.5).

Brackeen also won the parallel bars (9.9). Dantzler was second (9.7), followed by Kypfer (9.6), Reyna (9.5) and Banks (9.1), who was tied with two others.

Central leads the boys’ team competition (167.300), followed by Odessa Permian (163.100), Cooper (155.300) and Abilene High (147.900).

Central also leads the girls team standings (117.900). El Paso Eastwood (116.750) is second, while El Paso Bel Air is third (115.250) and Abilene High is third (104.300). Wylie is sixth (99.400) and Cooper seventh (99.000).

AHS’ Azurae Martin had the best individual finish for Abilene teams, taking ninth in the beam (9.700).

Day 2 begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with the optional round. The two-day scores will determine the winners, along with the qualifiers for the state meet April 26-27 at A&M Consolidated in College Station.
