High school polls: Mishawaka football moves into Class 5A No. 1 slot for first time ever

The Mishawaka football team has been as dominant as any in Indiana this season. The Cavemen are outscoring their opponents 229-79 in route to a perfect 6-0 record heading into this week's home game against NorthWood, and poll voters have taken notice.

Following Mishawaka's win over Warsaw and previous 5A No. 1 Whiteland's loss, the Cavemen have moved into the No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Records suggest that it is believed to be the first time Mishawaka has ascended to the No. 1 spot. The 1977 undefeated team ranked as high as No. 3, while the 1980 Cavemen reached as high as No. 2 in the polls. More recently the 2010 and 2018 Mishawaka football teams also got as high as No. 3, according to program historian Dean McCool.

"I think it is a neat thing for our community," Mishawaka head coach Keith Kinder said via text. "However, they don't hand out trophies for being ranked No. 1."

Mishawaka's Northern Lakes Conference clash with NorthWood on Friday night also features a 6-0 Panther squad, which is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, and will likely decide the NLC championship with two games remaining in the regular season.
