H.S. Roundup: Berne Union girls topple Notre Dame to remain undefeated

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Berne Union 39, Portsmouth Notre Dame 31: The Lady Rockets extended their undefeated streak to 21 games and reestablished itself as the No. 3-ranked team in Ohio after edging out a win over the No. 6-ranked Lady Titans on Saturday. A 16-point first quarter handed the Lady Rockets an early advantage, and they managed to stifle rallies by the Lady Titans in the second and fourth quarters to keep their perfect record in tact.

Both Sophia Kline and Baylee Mirgon scored in double figures by the end of the game, and combined to score 30 points for Berne Union themselves. Kline ended the game with a game-high 18 points, while Mirgon added on 12 points.

Fisher Catholic 62, Grove City Christian 32: The Irish notched their third-straight win in blowout fashion after defeating the Eagles on Friday. Three of the Irish logged 10 points or more and combined for 59 points, while the Eagles only had one player score in double figures.

Voni Bethel led all scorers after tallying a towering 30 points and six steals. She was followed in scoring by Ellie Bruce and Ava Albert, who scored 15 points and 14 points, respectively. Bruce also logged 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Albert picked up seven assists.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fairfield Union 62, Amanda-Clearcreek 25: The Falcons picked up their fifth-straight win and held their opponent to under 30 points for the third time this season after defeating the Aces on Saturday. Caleb Schmelzer led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, while Caleb Redding and Ted Harrah each pitched in 12 points. Redding also hit a game-high three 3-pointers in the win.

Tucker Shamblin led the Aces with 15 points, while Miguel Lobo added three points after sinking a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Brody Elder, Tanner Rose and Jace Morrison each chipped in two points apiece.

Fairfield Christian Academy 53, Fisher Catholic 47: The Knights logged their second win in a row after inching out a close win over the Irish on Saturday. John Grabbans led the Knights in scoring with 13 points, while Sam Workman clocked out with 12 points to his name. Ben Hopple added on nine points, and Matthew Keener and Sam Rauch pitched in six points apiece.

The Irish were led by Peyton Owens, who scored a game-high 16 points. Grant Keefer ended the game with 12 points, while Hyde O'Reilly added 11 points. Owens and Keefer both tied for the game-high in 3-pointers after knocking down three apiece.
