H.S. ROUNDUP: Both Whitman-Hanson basketball teams debut with statement wins over Pembroke

Both the Whitman-Hanson High boys and girls basketball teams unveiled the new season in style Tuesday night.

Led by a combined 38 points from senior Drew Daley and junior Evan Yakavonis (19 apiece), the Panthers (1-0) protected their home court with a 77-68 win over Patriot League rival Pembroke (0-1). Cole Champignie added 15 points and Ryan Baker stacked 14 points and 12 rebounds while providing a strong defensive presence for Whitman-Hanson.

As impressive as the boys were, the girls matched it.

Seven different players scored as the Panthers (1-0) clamped down against Pembroke (0-1) on the road, only allowing 3 points in the second quarter to escape with a 45-27 win. Sophomore Taryn Leonard led all scorers with 15 points and senior guard Caitlin Leahy added 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Duxbury 50, North Quincy 47 (OT): Lyla Peters scored 4 of her game-high 16 points in overtime to lead the Dragons (1-0) to a road win in the season opener for both teams. Peters' free throw with 8.6 seconds left broke a 47-all tie. Kendall Quinn added 9 points for the Dragons, and Amanda Donovan chipped in with 8. Ava Bryan led NQ (0-1) with 14 points. Autumn O'Campos added 11, and Molly Toland had 7, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key that put NQ ahead, 46-43, in the opening minute of OT. Each team lost its leading scorer from last season to prep school with Duxbury's Molly Donovan transferring to St. George's and North Quincy's Orlagh Gormley switching to Dexter Southfield.

Franklin 54, Oliver Ames 45: Making a statement in their varsity debuts, freshman Kamryn Derba led the way for OA (0-1) with 11 points, freshman Maeve Horsman scored 9 points, junior Annie Reilly scored 8 points and snatched 8 rebounds. Senior guard Maddie Homer played well defensively and added 7 points and 5 boards.

Holbrook  41, South Shore Christian 30: Senior Alyssa Slamin scored 26 points for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Avon 28, Sturgis West 13: Hanelie Cadet scored 16 points and recorded 13 steals, Kylie Mallett scored 5 points and Dahlia Parent grabbed 14 rebounds for the Panthers (1-0).

Braintree 46, Milton 26: Along with a strong team-wide defensive outing, Ava MacDonald (17 points) and Hannah Sherrick (12 points) powered the Wamps (1-0) to deliver coach Eugene Buczynski his first victory.

Bridgewater-Raynham 59, Winthrop 21: Natalia Hall-Rosa led with a game-high 23 points, 7 boards and 5 steals, while the trio of Reese Bartlett (9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals) Kate Lambert (6 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) and Brenna Woodbury (5 points, 5 assists, 5 steals) stuffed the stat sheet for the Trojans (1-0).

Rockland 48, Notre Dame Academy 39: Maddy Hermenau led the Bulldogs (1-0) with 22 points. Ava Orlando led NDA with 16 points in the loss.

Norwell 56, Bedford 39: Senior Chloe Richardson scored a team-high 20 points for the Clippers (1-0), who also got 10 points from sophomore forward Maddie Oliver and 8 points from senior guard Chloe Kirchner.

Silver Lake 60, Scituate 54: The win brings the Lakers to 1-0, the loss sinks the Sailors to 0-2. Cat deMacedo scored 19 points in the win.

Carver 62, Boston Prep Charter 20: The Crusaders (1-0) earned their first win behind 17 points from sophomore Jadyn Sotomayor, along with senior Ashleigh Johnson’s 16 points and sophomore Sarah Stairs’ 10 points.

Middleboro 49, Seekonk 40: The Sachems (1-0) clinched their first win of the new campaign.

Pentucket 52, Brockton 46: The Boxers (0-1) fell short in the season opener as senior Naveiha Madison (9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks), senior Naveah King (9 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, 1 block), senior Ngozi Nwosu (7 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block) and junior Sunali Carter (7 points, 6 rebounds) shined.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Franklin 55, Oliver Ames 42: Cole Craffey led the Tigers (0-1) with 16 points and Chris Elias put up 11 points.

Braintree 68, Milton 29: Calum McClorey (12 points) and Terry Elie (10 points) cracked double digits in the season-opening victory.

Canton 60, North Attleboro 51: The junior tandem of Zaza Francoeur (18 points) and Jamaal McConnell (17 points) powered the Bulldogs (1-0) to victory.

Scituate 71, Silver Lake 54: Michael Porter scored 21 points as the Sailors won their season opener at home. Dawit Quilty added 14 points for Scituate, and Jimmy Tolton had 11.

BOYS TRACK

Cardinal Spellman 56, Archbishop Williams 34: All with first-place finishes, Gianvito Montillo (4:57.36, 1 mile), Eamonn Fennell (2:56.40, 1,000-meter) and Jack Paula (5'6", high jump) excelled for the Bishops on Tuesday.

GIRLS TRACK

Archbishop Williams 43, Cardinal Spellman 42: For Archbishop Williams, Katie Santamaria (48.88, 300-meter) Hannah Griffin (1:58.62, 600-meter) Ciara McMenamin (3:47.72, 1,000-meter) Maddie Hussey (12:18.56, 2 miles) all finished first in their respective disciplines.

BOYS SWIMMING

Archbishop Williams 57, O’Bryant 25, East Boston 12: Junior Evan O'Brien broke school records in both the 100-meter butterfly and 100-meter backstroke as the Bishops prevailed in the season opener.

Quincy/North Quincy 83, Brockton 39: The Presidents/Raiders defeated the Boxers.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Quincy/North Quincy 88, Brockton 44: The team completed the sweep of Brockton on Tuesday.
