H.S. Roundup: Lancaster boys win third straight OCC swimming title

Lancaster boys win OCC: The Lancaster boys swim team won their third straight Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division championship at the James A. Steen Aquatic Center on the campus of Kenyon College.  The Gales dominated the meet in winning seven of the eleven races.

The Golden Gales finished with 295 points, followed by Pickerington Central (211), Reynoldsburg (192), Central Crossing (170), Newark (149) and Groveport (13).

Depth was shown in having multiple swimmers place in the individual events in which the top twelve finishers earned points.  Lancaster opened the meet by winning the 200-yard Medley Relay in 1:42.53. Members of the championship team were Jack Hensley, Max Hensley, Will McMasters and Cambden Morris. The 200-yard Freestyle was won by Max Hensley in 1:49.16.  Colin Kelly finished third in 2:03.90 and Anthony Riley was eleventh in 3:21.87.  Jack Hensley won the 200-yard IM in 1:57.08 with John Pennington finishing sixth in 2:42.16. Max Hensley won the 500-yard Freestyle in 5:06.41. Colin Kelly finished third in 5:38.97 and Sam Strigle finished seventh in 6:38.54.

Will McMaster was the OCC champion in the 100-yard Backstroke in 57.20. Noah Knuutila finished fifth in 1:18.86. The 100-yard Breaststroke was won by Jack Hensley in 59.76 seconds.  Jimmy Geier finished seventh in 1:22.31 and Jack Borchers finished eighth in 1:23.99. The Gales also finished first in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay with Jack Hensley, Max Hensley, Cambden Morris, and Will McMasters finishing in 1:37.24.  The 50-yard Freestyle saw four Gales swimmers score points. Cambden Morris finished fourth in 25.06 seconds, Sam Strigle was sixth in 26.35 seconds, Brayden Dennison was ninth in 27.98 seconds, and Jack Borchers was twelfth in 28.49 seconds.

The 100-yard Butterfly saw Will McMasters place third in 55.16 seconds and Jimmy Geier finish fifth in 1:06.66. John Pennington finished fourth in the 100-yard Freestyle in 1:00.10 and Noah Knuutila finished eighth in 1:09.74. The 400-yard Freestyle Relay team finished third in 3:49.00. Members of the relay were Cambden Morris, John Pennington, Sam Strigle, and Colin Kelly.

The Lady Gales swam to a third-place finish in the Buckeye Division. Pickerington Central placed first (374), followed by Reynoldsburg (225), Lancaster (207), Central Crossing (132), Newark (116) and Groveport (87).

The 400-yard Freestyle Relay team of Gracie Stuart, Drea Echard, Kyra Walling, and Amelia Robertson finished second in 4:44.63. Amelia Robertson also finished second in the 100-yard Backstroke in 1:08.41. Drea Echard finished sixth in 1:17.83 and Caroline Conklin finished tenth in 1:28.85 in the 100yard Backstroke. Kendal Cox finished third in 28.50 seconds in the 50-yard Freestyle.  Also, scoring points were Lauren Wilson in 31.00 for a seventh-place finish and Drea Echard finishing ninth in 32.16. Lancaster was able to swim to third-place finishes in two relays. The 200-yard Freestyle Relay of Lauren Wilson, Gracie Stuart, Kyra Walling, and Kendall Cox finished in 2:04.43. The 200-yard Medley Relay finished in 2:12.13 with members being Amelia Robertson, Marlee Byers, Kendall Cox, and Lauren Wilson.

Marlee Byers swam to a fourth-place finish in 1:22.89 and Gracie Stuart finished fifth in 1:24.78 in the 100-yard Breaststroke. The 100-yard Freestyle saw four Lady Gales finish in the top ten. Kendal Cox finished fourth in 1:03.63, Lauren Wilson was in fifth in 1:09.01, Gracie Stuart finished sixth in 1:09.11 and Kyra Walling finished eighth in 1:11.10. The 200-yard IM race saw Amelia Robertson finish fourth in 2:37.23 and Marlee Byers finish sixth in 2:53.88. Kyra Walling finished eighth in the 200-yard Freestyle in 2:41.27.  Caroline Conklin recorded a ninth-place finish in the 500 Yard Freestyle in 7:43.37.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fairfield Union 70, Jackson 30: The Lady Falcons continue to play at a high level as they cruised to a non-conference win over Jackson.

Elly Lewis led the way with 36 points and tied the school record for the second time this year by connecting on eight 3-pointers. She added five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Macy Martindale added 14 points and four rebounds and Christian Thompson chipped in four points, 15 rebounds and five steals.

Fisher Catholic 64, Fairfield Christian Academy 19: The Irish cruised in their Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win over the Knights.

Ellie Bruce led the way with 16 points, Voni Bethel had 14 points and seven assists and Ava Albert chipped in eight points. Sydney Snoke had a team-leading eight rebounds.

Liberty Union 73, Marion Elgin 42: Nine different players scored in the Lions’ non-conference win over the Rockets.

Abbie Riddle led the way with 17 points, while Morgan Love and Ella Brown scored 10 points each. Delaney Peck and Payton Hockradel added eight points apiece and Brooklyn Angelo chipped in seven points for the Lions, who improved to 12-8 on the season.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fairfield Christian Academy 50, Grove City Christian 49: The Knights were able to pull out a thrilling Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win over the Eagles.

John Grabans led the way with 18 points, Ben Hopple added 10 and Sam Workman chipped in seven points.

Fisher Catholic 34, Berne Union 27: The Irish won a defensive battle as they topped rival Berne Union in Mid-State League-Cardinal Division action.

Peyton Owens led the Irish with 12 points and Hyde O’Rielley added 11.

HIGH SCHOOL TRACK

Lancaster boys compete at Wittenberg: The Lancaster Gales boys track and field team competed at Wittenberg University along with over 130 other high schools. Standout performances for the Gales include:

60 m hurdles - Brendon Simcox 3rd, 8.48; 60 m dash - Gunner Richards 5th, 7.19; 1,600 m - Zane Schorr 4th, 4:22.69; 400 m - Colton Thress 2nd. 50.50; 3,200 m - Trevor Lanoy 2nd 9:17.94, Isaiah Lanoy 4th 9:27.38; 4x400 m relay: Brendon Simcox, Wes Taylor, Zane Schorr, Colton Thress - 2nd - 3:29.17; Pole vault - Lukas Lang 2nd, 14’9”, Dan Edwards 3rd, 14’9”, Brody Ehorn 7th, 13’3”; Weight throw - Trent Tharp 1st - 51’11”, Andrew Franchini 6th - 45’11.5”.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

Lancaster H.S. to hold tennis meeting: There will be a boys’ tennis organizational meeting for any returning players or for those interested in playing for the Golden Gales high school tennis team this spring. The meeting will be held on February 9th at 6:30PM in Room 209 at Lancaster High School
